“Connect Your Azure App Service on Linux to Microsoft SQL Server 2014 in Standalone Mode”

Unable to Connect to Standalone Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from Azure App Service on Linux
Introduction to Azure App Service on Linux
Azure App Service on Linux is an Azure service that enables developers to build, deploy, and host web applications and websites. It provides a platform for developers to quickly deploy and scale applications without worrying about infrastructure management. It supports popular languages and frameworks, such as .NET Core, Node.js, Java, PHP, and Python. It also provides features such as auto-scaling, continuous deployment from Azure DevOps, and integration with Visual Studio Code.

Problem
Recently, a customer reported an issue with connecting to an on-premises Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from an Azure App Service on Linux. The customer was able to connect to the database from their local machine, but not from the Azure App Service. The customer was using the same connection string and had verified that the firewall was not blocking the connection.

Troubleshooting
The first step in troubleshooting this issue was to verify that the connection string was correct and that the firewall was not blocking the connection. After verifying that the connection string was correct and the firewall was not blocking the connection, we looked at the log files and noticed that the connection was timing out. This indicated that the issue was likely related to the network.

Solution
After further investigation, we determined that the issue was related to the network. The customer’s network was blocking outbound connections from the Azure App Service. We worked with the customer to open the necessary ports and allow outbound connections from the Azure App Service. Once the ports were opened, the customer was able to connect to the Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from the Azure App Service.

Conclusion
In this article, we discussed a customer issue where they were unable to connect to an on-premises Microsoft SQL Server 2014 from an Azure App Service on Linux.
